I was tweeting Yuki last night (midnight Thursday here was 3pm Friday there). She said the earthquake seemed to go on forever. She was able to walk home from work in Tokyo, but many are stuck with no public transporation running. Now watching the news videos of the devastation. Praying for all our friends in Japan.

Nice thoughts and ones I'm sure we all share - it looks pretty horrific from what I've seen.

I'm really sad to hear that this happened, and my thoughts go out to everyone in Japan and the other affected areas.

Libera just posted on their blog, Facebook and Twitter:

Good thing they weren't headed for Japan this Spring.

In addition to the original 8.9 quake that whipped up a 20 foot tall tsunami there have been several aftershocks in the 6 range over the past 24 hours. The good news is that there have been no reports of tall buildings coming down. OTOH there's a report that they're having difficulty with one or more of their nuclear plants. The quake knocked out cooling pumps. There's a danger of overheating which would require the venting of radioactive steam or even worse a Chernobyl/Three Mile Island like explosion.

There are reports now that 2 nuclear reactors may be in the process of undergoing meltdown of their cores.
