i just wanted to comment on the whole voice changing thing. I find it amazing how some boys are still able to sing through it and others are not. For example, look at Josh, Sam, Liam, etc., even though their voices have certainly deepened they are still able to sing the low notes but James T., Joe Snelling, Ed Day, pretty much as soon as their voices changed they left the choir. Weird how it works.

A lot of times it might not have to do with the changing voice. That tends to occur right around the time boys find lots of other things to be interested in.

Whether it be choirs or youth sports, sometimes they just wander off and you never really know why.

I find it very interesting that a whole song is given completely to the men's voices this US tour. If somebody has a record, audio or video of 'Te Lucis' from this tour, please write pm to me.

There will not be as they did not sing this at the Moody morning service and thats the only tv recording they did for this tour.

Now it has taken Daniel Fontannaz.. :( I know, voice break is nature, but this really make me sad  I'm such a big Daniel-fan & there is no Libera music video in which he's the soloist. Fortunately we have this wonderful Panis Angelicus-solo of Daniel on Peace album & his solo in 'Veni veni Emanuel' on christmas-album from which I only heard a mini audio file on amazon. I've ordered the christmas-album, maybe I can take Veni veni E. as a consolation

Not sure what you're talking about Sue. No one who went to the Philippines concerts complained about voice break with Daniel. Yes there are signs his voice is changing now but he still sang his solo for Stay With me beautifully.

Re: Daniel's voice. You can hear distinct differences in his voice between the live version of 'Stay with Me' during the Phil concerts and his Veni Veni Emmanuel solo on the Christmas Album CD. A bit raspier but still high. He did sing a beautiful solo, and I was surprised that for a boy his age (isn't he 15/16?) he was still singing in the front row with the younger boys on most of the songs. He's some kind of boy wonder!

I agree about Daniel enjoying every moment of it (not that the other boys don't). He's got one of the best grins of anybody. When he sings you can just tell he's thinking to himself "yeah, I'm a boss" haha.

I should think so - after all, he is now the one giving the speech about voice change and learning to discover your new voice and listening for the lower voices in the harmonies (he did this speech before Ave Verum which features the lower voices particularly)

Daniel is such a patient soul :D he waited so long to get a solo, and now that he has some, I think he has really grown in his musicality, and mabe has even come out of his skin a little bit. I just got my Christmas album today, and one of the first tracks I listened to was Veni Veni Emmanuel. I think Daniel's voice has matured and gotten better as he has gotten older. It made me tear up(yes, I am very emotional  ) because it was so beautiful. Just some thoughts...
dolorosa, flumenosa, desolata, lacrimabila-
the water sighs for me
Through teardrops now I see
The streaming water knows
The fountain overflows

To cry for all, to wash all sorrows in waves of peace and love
Free my thirsty soul again
O living fountain

Voice Change*

Post by Yorkie »

*I call it breaking but I know that term upsets some people.....

Anyway, I found this paper on the old t'interweb which I found interesting reading:

http://martin-ashley.com/assets/files/M ... report.pdf

I thought there was a thread on this subject kicking around somewhere but I couldn't find it.
If I’ve got owt to say I says it, and if I’ve got owt to ask I asks it.

It is absolutely true that in most developed countries the onset of puberty in both girls and boys comes earlier now than it did before WW2. There's a mountain of evidence for this and the measures used in pediatric studies are far more physiologic than in martin- ashley's study. Actually data shows that in the first half of the 20th century there is already a trend before 1950. After 1950 it accelerates, by 1970 the average child in developed countries enters each stage of puberty about 12 months earlier than did children before WW2. The trend crosses class lines and does not appear to be related to nutrition. Studies in Eastern Europe back before the walls fell indicate that the critical factor is electrification. The human brain determines when to begin puberty by keeping track of the amount of time the child has spent exposed to light. Once lights are installed in a home the children are exposed to a longer period of light during a day so they enter puberty at a younger age. Of course, the electric light has been around sinc 1870. Why does the trend accelerate after WW2? The answer is that light bulbs prior to 1950 were usually in the 20 to 30 watt power range. In the 1950's 60, 70 and 100 watt bulbs became standard. Evidentally the lower watt bulbs weren't powerful enough to influence the children's brains.

Tully. In depth explanation. I know that I was eleven when my voice (as I've said before and Yorkie says in the UK we say your voice breaks, but it's not in any derogatory way at all just normal usage to us). Back then I probably didnt understand the word puberty. But yes boys and girls are getting younger when the hit this milestone in their lives. And of course this is a headache for a group like Libera (or rather RP) who nuture youngster and then.........., lose them. Yet Robert keeps finding such wonderful talent. We dont have to go anywhere to see that Mini Ben (he'll always be that to me, although he's probably taller than I am!) and Josh contiunued to sing with their high voices much longer than anypne could have expected. And weren't we happy that they continued to give us such plaesure with them.
Boys will come and go, some will stay longer, some less and for those whose voices change early let's listen and make the most of what they are able to 'give' us.
