Jen,
I can ask my friend and see if he will tell me. But I imagine that we really won't know until the next public performance and see whether he is in the back row or not. Not every boy's voice breaks at the same age. Tom is only 14. He could very easily have a full year of treble singing yet.
Plus, he may even be able to do Michael's trick of being able to sing high even after his voice changed. It works for a little bit.

I've been wondering about this since I saw the recent crop of videos. I actually think that he can still hit the high notes (maybe with a bit more difficulty, but not sure about that). I believe he sang the high notes in the "When Shepherds Watched" video (around the 1:15 mark). Also, I couldn't see very clearly, but I believe he was standing with mini-Ben and the other smaller boys for Hark! the Herald.

In O Come all Ye Faithful, he was also standing to the side with mini-Ben and the smaller boys. The only one in the middle who is singing the descant is Liam, so I assume the other boys singing with him are somewhere else. i.e. Tom, mini-Ben, etc.

Now, I don't know if I'm reading too much into their positions, but when I sing with a choir, they usually group us by voices. That's why I think Tom can still hit those high notes.

It's a little weird to not see him prominently in some of the vids, and not to hear him do a solo, but 1) the chosen soloists were absolutely perfect for the job, and 2) this could be a way of easing us into the inevitable. That is, the time when Tom can no longer hit those high notes.

I, for one, hope Tom's voice hasn't changed yet, and that we'll hear another (more, if possible) solo from him. It's unlikely, but not impossible. I think my heart will break a little when the time comes that Tom and the current "older boys" can no longer hit the high notes.

Then again, if You Were There was his last solo, I can't think of a better ending for his amazing years as a soloist.

That said, I've been wondering the same thing about Ed Day. :?

I don't think we should focus on personal and private issue relating to the boys. It is inevitable that they will all (including Tom, God willing) grow over time and progress through to adulthood. This is not the end for these boys, just a new beginning. There is no doubt that we, as fans of Libera, have been priviledged by having the opportunity to listen to these boys at this phase of there lives and like we have said before; "Libera" is what is most important and as long as the maestro remains at the helm then Libera is in very safe hands and we will continue to be priviledged to listen to the wonderful music they will continue to produce for many more years to come.

I agree its pretty hurtful to just keep going on about his voice breaking. Tom is growing into a man and his voice dropping is 100% normal, the way some people speak its like his life will end when it drops. People need to stop making such an issue out of something that all boys go though and think about more postive things.

Yeah! like him being an awesome tenor or bass! :D I love basses! I can't really see Tom being bass....but you never know! he could be a countertenor for a while (like my dad) and then deepen over time...Byron Jones used to be a tenor but he sings bass now..which is kind of interesting since his speaking voice is still pretty high!
the only reason I'd be sad about Tom's voice breaking is that I'm not likely to ever get to hear a solo from him again! and he has such a pretty voice too! but maybe he'll form a band like some of the other boys have! tom..in a band...!

Joe is too young for his voice to break yet. Plus, he has a naturally lower speaking voice. His reason for leaving the group, while not released, is probably not his voice.

Hmm.. Actually, when I'm in the choir in secondary school, we have several boys and most of them still remain in soprano while their voice is breaking. I kinda of find the awkward period - between the breaking and maturing part producing the best quality (but of course, some find find it hard to control the voice).. Of course it depends from one person to the other, but just see Andrew Johnston, who is 14 just like Tom, and he seems to be doing just as well.

Anyway, what actually make a song stand out is the harmony. You need some to sing high and some to sing low in order to produce a nice sounding harmony. The altos, tenors, basses are equally important as sopranos. Like what Callum used to say, the low notes helps support the high notes. Without the low notes, the high notes really doesn't bring out the true meaning of the song.

By the way, I just curious, cos Libera hardly has any alto soloist? I mean, in my school choir, when there's a song which requires soloists, we usually have an alto and a soprano soloist. :D

Amen. RP at the helm will make sure that the continuity is there. Plus, it's very heartening to see the new choristers. There's so much ahead of them. :D

It's very hard to imagine, but it will happen. It's a natural course of human development, but Tom as and will leave an awesome legacy. He epitomises the progress Libera have made since their transition from Angel Voices back in the late 90's. They are gaining popularity all the time.

Just to ease everyone's minds for, at least, a little bit, they just sang at the service called, Songs and Lessons for the Christmas season this week. I have it from my "informed source" that Tom was in full form for his part in it.
Even when his voice does change, he will be part of Libera for a very long time. His music talent will last him all of his life and I am sure everyone else has noticed, they are getting a larger group of the older boys remaining again.
