Well, I can't agree And to really shovel it on I think that the voice of a 7/8 year old is not a thing of beauty Nope, it isn't until a lad gets to 10 or 11 that his voice is mature enough to sing (to my ears) well enough to do a solo. Sorry, just the way I feel (I have a reputation to maintain you know ).
If I’ve got owt to say I says it, and if I’ve got owt to ask I asks it.

Well Steven G begs to differ as he has been doing solo Libera stuff since te age of 6. And pulling it off.

Well, tell me which songs and I'll happily listen to them but frankly most groups of 6/7/8 year olds sound like cats in a sack being drowned in the canal to me

Ok, I was intrigued so I went delving in to the past of the Great Steven G.......
According to BCSD Steven joined Libera aged 7 and appeared on t.v. at 9. His first solo's were on the AV3 album released Oct '97. Steven's DOB is 18/07/87 so he was probably nine when he recorded his first solo's which were Away In A Manger & Mistletoe & Wine. #edit# I think it is Steven that starts singing at about 2 mins in the first one.....

#edit# how I loathe that song I assume Steven kicks in at about 3.18. Again, the sound of his voice at this stage in his career does nothing for me (if you know what I mean).
OK, first thing you should know is I'm not a fan of the AV albums. They do not represent Libera to me and could be any reasonably competent school choir IMHO. Listening to these two tracks I stand by my previous statement, pleasant enough but not in any way (to me at least) the beautiful sound that Libera achieve. I don't think 9 y.o. Steven would get a solo with Libera.
By the time we get to 'Libera' in '99 though we have touchdown

Now, I hope I haven't upset you in any of this, I just wanted to run through it for myself - and guess what, I'm right

Yorkie i adore you but Steven has a way better voice than Tom Cully or even Michael and Big Ben, the fact we still listen to Stevens work 8-9 years on says how good he is.
And my bad i swear when i became a fan in 07 that it said Steven started singing solos at the age of 7.

Well, I hardly think Steven's vocals can be compared to Michael H.'s, because most of the songs they sang were very different. Steven and Big Ben's voices really cannot be compared either, because they (to my knowledge) never soloed on the same songs. Tom and Steven's voices can only be compared because they have the same piercing, pure and angelic quality. The similarities really end there though, as they have completely different tone.
Tom sang his first solo when he was about 7, when he did There Is A Green Hill with Michael Horncastle, who would have been 9.

Hi Dani, love you too
Just to be clear, I'm not doubting Steven's ability as a singer, he definitely turned out to be one of the greats but not until he was older.

That's very subjective. Steven is up there with the best, but I wouldnt' even begin to state which boy had the best EVER solo voice. How do you judge it anyway. What you hear with your ears, might be conversely different to oppinions formed by the next person who ears it.
It's like a song somebody likes, then you ask the next person and they say they hate it.

Well of course it is my opinion but i go on the fact he has been the 1 of the few boys to go onto greater things, he can play many instruments to a high standered, has song writing credits to his name, had singing jobs outside of Libera . He is clearly more musically talented than even Ben C who from what i have read online can play no instruments.
My point being he is overall just musically gifted . He has a great talent in all fields of music. Hence me personally thinking he is the most gifted.

With regards to boys singing at a very young age i.e. 8/9/10 etc... I agree there is a weak albeit sweet sound, that's too vulnerable to take on any major workload for solo duties.
I think it's a great idea though, to bleed them into the role that hopefully they will be undertaking with style and ease once they get more power into their lungs. Not to mention battling the nerves of stage fright, which would have turned my legs to jelly at their age lol
Therefore having Mini James and Freddie doing solo duet for the opening line of Prayer is an ideal platform to get them accustomed to what it can be like when it's just you with the mic.

I can see your point, i know when they did the concerts in Palm Springs last year a lot of people on the Yahoo group and youtube said they had sounded the weakest they had for years, and thats simply because of all the young boys coming up, they are not quite there talent wise and thats to be expected as there avrage age has once again dropped to about 9 years of age.

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion and this is the best place for you to state it. I love a good discussion, especially when I win
And I agree with you that Steven is very talented and was (eventually) a great Liberian - one of the best ever. We just disagree about what age it is that a boy becomes a great treble. And you know what? It's fine to disagree. We have our own opinions and likes and dislikes and what you like can never be wrong
Night all.
