The title is Canon because Sanctus is based on Canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel (1653 - 1706)

Bayan Ko is a song about a people living under oppression and resisting. It was orignally written not about oppression under the Spanish or General Marcos, but about another oppressor who appeared at the end of the 19th century promising to help the Phillipinos throw out the Spanish. When the Spanish left this nation seized control of the Phillipines, claiming that the natives weren't ready for independence - and securing a naval base in between Hawaii and mainland Asia. At the time most ships were fueled by coal and generally could not cruise more than 4000 to 5000 miles before needing to refuel. The new colonists waged a 20+ year long war against the Phillipinos, by which time oil had replaced coal and the cruising range of ships had been doubled. They no longer need the Phillipines, The number of Phillipinos who died during the Huk rebellion is controversial. Estimates range from 25,000 to more than one million.
