It's because of the appaling debt ridden legacy left to us by the last Labour government they are now having to make these drastic deficit cuts.

Closing the only library- is it a mean joke?
Norbury is a sh*t hole. Its basically 95% cheap chavvy take away shops.
Annoyed...
That's a typical comment from an outsider.
I've seen the heart of Norbury, and I can assure you that there a decent, and kind people there.
You look at any town centre and you will find cheap chavvy take aways.
but you can't read a book by its cover. you need to look deeper before making a completely uneducated comment like that.

My mum lives in Streatham so its only down the road. Its not somewhere most people would choice to live with money.
Just to throw in to prove i know the area. Its dingry, dirty and looks run down. I am sure there are some nice parts but the main road though from Streatham to Croydon does not paint a pretty picture.

I was brought up in mainly red/labour voting territory, and I have voted for them in past elections, but it will be a long, long time before I put an 'x' in their box again. That doesn't necessarily mean I vote for Blue either (or what do you get if you mix yellow with blue now it's a coalition?). I'm probably just one of the millions of disillusioned voters out there at present.
Anyway off topic I suppose. I've signed the petition but one of the reasons for local libraries closing is because not many people go to them anymore. Why? What are we using to sign this petition? Wouldn't be something called the internet would it?
Ahhh, but you have made the assumption that I'm a red under the bed, socialist & Labour voter. Sorry to disappoint but I've never voted Labour in my life and doubt I ever will.
I'm also in the camp of despising all politicians - they lie to get elected, break their pledges and then fiddle their expenses. But you need to be aware that what the current lot are about is not really to do with balancing the books - you just need to look at the story about selling off forests to see that. Total money raised? Next to nothing. Fat profit for a Tory Lord? Guaranteed.

So what you are basicly saying, if you have money you a decent person, if not your a chav.
I can assure you although like most London boroughs, Norbury is ethnically mixed and they care for there community, money does not make a decent person.

No it's the Tories at work. First they stole the milk from kids, now it's their books. Still look on the bright side, if they're not wasting their time reading and their parents are inevitably unemployed from the crashing economy, they can earn some money sweeping chimneys or working sewing machines in sweat shops.
Crazy. But you know stupid actions are popular ... Sadly. You can see it all around the globe ...
For example, the government (broadly speaking) of my country (Latvia- right next to 'the Russian bear' ) cut wages in the public sector by 30-40% (since 2009) !!! (healthcare, education, police etc.). But they reduced their own salaries much slower- some 5- 10% maybe ... Closed even many hospitals

No i said the restaurants was chavvy. Anywhere that serves " Chicken" i use that term loosly for 3 legs/wings for £1.99 or Pizza for £2 and so on is not a place you want to be seen. And yet Norbury is over ran with places like this. Then throw in the cheap off licences and so on and thats the main road of Norbury. Fans that have come from abroad have all said they did not feel safe when they visited St P's. I wonder why that is?
Paul at no time have i called you Chavvy. I just wont accept the fact its a high class area as its simply not. Its a ran down area.

Quoted for Truth
Well yes and no. It's also because the bankers gambled recklessly with money they didn't have to make themselves huge bonuses that most of us could work a lifetime and never earn. And when it goes wrong we have to pump in 100's of billions to bail them out. And a year later they are back to paying themselves big fat bonuses whilst they bleed the rest of us dry with ridiculous lending rates whilst paying f all to savers.
But that's Tory economics at it's best - heads they win, tails you lose.

I posted on here to try and drum up a bit of support, regardless of what some people may think of Norbury, and its turned into a political nightmare.
I'm going to bump my original OP as I don't want the purpose of this thread to be diluted by all this heated discussion.

Well, you also posted it on the wrong board - it isn't news about Libera so it should go in the Miscellaneous thread. Still, it's been a lot of fun (and I did sign it) but I don't think the council will take much notice of a petition signed by people who don't live in the area Paul.
