But I'm going to say it! I think that might just be the best Libera concert I have ever attended.

Every element perfect. Staging, musicians, cathedral architecture, lighting, singing, acoustics. Just brilliant in every way.

Also I genuinely welled up when Joseph sang those first notes from atop the choir screen. It was magical...

Wish me luck on my late night journey back to Londinium, and see you all in Sinfonia Smith Square. :)
I wouldn't say the best ever but it would have to be the best UK concert tonight for many, many years. The lighting and sound were perfect. Oh yes, nearly forgot, the singing was excellent too. A few changes forced by illness but you would never have known. The cathedral design allowed for the type of creative placement of soloists on Voca Me & Salva Me that I haven't seen since 2010. It all came together to enthrall the audience. Met a few first timers too who will be guaranteed future fans. Apparently, CDs sold well at the interval.

Safe journey home - think of those of us abed in hotel rooms without aircon!

So I'll do a "brief" review of Lincoln. I said that my Chester review would be short but it ended up being long lol.... so who knows how protracted this will end up being

I'll start with a few key points that were already pointed out by others. Firstly, nearly every fan that I spoke to said that this concert was definitely one of the better ones they had attended, or at least was definitely a standout. Because many European fans are able to see them more often than someone like myself, I take them at their word in this regard; yet I definitely think this has been one of the better concerts I've ever seen them in as well.

So why is that? Well, the cathedral itself created a different ambiance than what we saw in Chester. Due to the architecture Chester did not have as many good opportunities for Libera's lighting as Lincoln Cathedral did. This is simply a limitation of the space.

The quality of the lighting sparked a fierce debate during intermission as to whether the stone archway separating the nave from the choir (on which a beautiful organ with golden pipes) was mounted, should be referred to as a "rood screen", a "pulpitum", an "organ loft", or a "quire screen".

Image

We ended up settling/ageeeing on pulpitum after I lost the argument for "rood screen"

This stone structure as well as the arches on either side created magnificent lighting effects which, when combined with the ceiling lighting in the choir part of the cathedral, as well as the side arches closest to the stage, enhanced the music with brilliant and dazzling color.

It made me realize just how paltry the lighting had been in comparison in Chester. Not to say that the lighting in Chester was poor, but this is like comparing a burger (perhaps even a really good and high quality burger from a mid-priced restaurant) to filet mignon! There's really just no comparison between good and great here.

But I'm not finished talking about pulpitums and rood screens and organ lofts quite yet  because both "Salva Me" and "Voca Me" had Ben and Joseph respectively having to run up to the top of the pulpitum (near the red curtain in the photo above) to do those descant solos! This created a marvelous effect especially when the boys had the spotlight put on them for their high note parts. It was kind of funny that they did it because poor Joseph after having done the high parts for his song had to run down from there and then be in position for his solo on "Prayer". Poor boy! But he actually handled it perfectly fine and his performance was top notch again, as was his brother's on all of their respective songs. As I already praised them quite extensively in my last review I will just say that they are both fantastic soloists and an asset to the choir, and then stop there.

Overall the choir sounded much better and much clearer tonight. I don't believe that this was entirely the result of the acoustics in Lincoln although that's certainly one of the factors – instead it was a confluence of the boys being more confident and the acoustics being just right for them.

I would go so far as to say that confidence was the main theme of the night in terms of the performances by the boys. We had a very confident performance by Freddie H who replaced Mitchel's lower duet with Ben on "Smile" (Mitchel was absent from the concert). Freddie, like Lewis, who I mentioned in my Chester review, is clearly going through a voice change but the slightly lower range and timbre of his voice adds to to the performance rather than detracts from it because it makes his voice sound somehow more rounded out. Obviously this wouldn't work for just any song but it certainly worked on this duet with Ben. He also did great on his other solo and duet parts, it's just that this one stood out a bit more because of the change in Chester.

Also, and because of Mitchel's absence, "O Beata" was sung completely solo by Cameron. I feel like he delivered the song with much greater confidence and poise than in Chester. We also got to hear his voice more clearly because the solo parts were sung as solos rather than as a duet. Being a very challenging song that requires the sustaining of some rather high notes, I don't envy any chorister that has to do this particular solo, yet Cameron's pleasant voice really shined through.

In my last review I realized I didn't mention Pietro who alongside Morgan did "Angel" with no flaws and with full confidence. I already greatly praised Morgan in my last review and I have nothing new to add except that he continued to be unflappable in his performance.

What surprised me the most was a conversation that happened after the concert with many of the fans when we were talking about which songs of the night were our favorites. I was surprised that so very many fans (although certainly not all), agreed that "Sacris Solemnis" was either their favorite song of the night or at least top 3. I was definitely one of those who would classify it exactly that way. It was just so flawlessly performed. Although I praised this song in Chester, it was even better in Lincoln with the superior acoustics – the boys also just seemed to have greater energy too. This doesn't just include those doing the high notes on the song or the intro solo by Freddie H, but just the overall choir being in top form.

The choir just sounded more well put together and the staging enhancements created a unique and wonderful atmosphere, the type that makes us come back to see them again and again and again! The type that makes us forget that we just sat through a two hours long concert that felt like it only lasted just 20 minutes!

So with that the UK summer tour has come to an end and everyone is heading home either domestically or internationally. With a new recording on the way, a Japan tour scheduled, and a Christmas concert on the horizon, we have much to look forward to for the remainder of the year as fans. Even for those like myself who are unable to attend any more concerts, the promise of a recording is always something wonderful to look forward to.

Aside from the concert and hearing our favorite choir, there is nothing better than hanging out with fellow fans, doing local sightseeing together, and just having a good time whether discussing music or not. I look forward to that just as much as I do the concerts if I'm being honest and neither fans nor choir have ever disappointed me to date! :D

Oh wow! Are you coming to Lincoln? If you are please do make yourself known somehow. Would love to say hello!

Unfortunately not. My budget will currently only run to one concert and Chester was most convenient. Hope everyone who's going has a great time. :)
No worries. Maybe next time.

They did not.

As for song lists, we have such information from FDL's twitter.

Who else has fans who fill out spreadsheets during the interval and immediately after the concert? Epic.

###edit - this was supposed to be a quote tweet from Yorkie & looks like accidentally edited Luckdragon's post so apologies to him ###

I've only ever experienced Libera in the UK and only since 2015, so I don't doubt that there have been better ones, and I envy you having attended them! But, having slept on it, I stand by what I said, that at least for my personal experience it is the best concert for all the aspects I listed. Every small detail in Lincoln came together amazingly, like the stage being that little bit wider than Chester meaning you could enjoy the choreography more, and brighter lighting on the boys in some sections so that you could actually see them more clearly. The stage being in front of the crossing, not inside it, so that the sound wasn't swallowed by the transepts and tower...

I made it home in less than 4hrs which was a minor miracle, and I only had to spend 20 minutes on a night bus!!

I'll give you some sympathy, for the hotel room without aircon! But my house was also stifling when I got home having had the windows shut all day, and I also have no aircon! I live not far from an RAF base that is a notorious heat-trap, and two years ago it was one of six locations in the UK that hit 40C...

I'd not be able to write reviews about concerts or remember half of what happens without FDL's notes. They are absolutely invaluable!

Thank you for your very speedy posting of the review! I had really enjoyed Chester, but Lincoln blew it out of the water.

I'd have gone with "rood screen" but I think there's a thread on LDF somewhere where we've discussed that before and I had to agree "pulpitum" was the much better fit for that particular style of structure!

Sacris Solemnis in Chester had been good but I didn't walk away from that concert with it as my favourite piece of the evening. In Lincoln I did! It was amazing, and that lighting during the song was really powerful! So absolutely my song of the night.

It was International Friendship Day yesterday.

It was lovely to catch up with so many fellow fans and friends in both Chester and Lincoln. Although I couldn't stay after the concert yesterday, the get-togethers in Chester for food and drink were fantastic. I'm also grateful to those that persuaded me to make the trip to Lincoln and to the generosity of two friends in particular regarding tickets, their kindness meant I ended up with quite an amazing seat.

 We certainly are a committed bunch but there is no choir quite like Libera anywhere. I say this as a fan of choral music generally by the way, there's just nothing that even remotely matches up to what Libera does.

With other choirs you can hear the same piece of music by choir x and then later by choir y, but with Libera you have original music, original arrangements, and a unique vocal architecture designed for them and them alone. It's unparalleled and is the reason so many of us have taken such joy in their music over the years.

But I'll stop my ranting there. :D

I'm so glad that you made it to Lincoln and had a chance to enjoy the concert despite all of the travel and other issues that you had! It was an amazing performance and I'm so glad we all had a chance to see it together as a fan community.

There was certainly something about "Sacris Solemnis" that really stood out. I'm hoping to read the reviews of other fans who attended as they get home or otherwise get settled.

So I’ve finally got round to finishing my review of Chester. I know it’s been a few days and we’ve already had reviews from Lincoln but I hope nobody minds me still posting my review here. I’m keen to share my experiences of my first Libera concert and I also know as an avid reader of reviews that you can never have too many (within reason!) as different people comment on and remember different things.

It is pretty long so I’m posting in two parts. Feel free to skim or totally ignore.

Part 1

My mum and I arrived in Chester on a lovely warm sunny evening and made our way through the busy streets where people at the end of a day out mixed with people leaving the races all dressed up and others heading off for a night out. We passed a few venues with loud music blaring out which made us hope the cathedral’s sound-proofing was good. Fortunately it got quieter in the area around the cathedral. I’ve been to Chester several times but never on a Saturday evening so I’ve never seen it quite like that.

I’ve also never been in the cathedral before so it was lovely to get a bit of a chance to look around, though hopefully I’ll get a chance to go back and do that at a more leisurely pace. I loved the roof and the stained glass windows. My only concern was that as it was still quite light outside, Libera’s lighting wouldn’t show up to good effect. However, it was pretty good, though from reading reviews of Lincoln the general consensus seems to be that it was better there.

I bought a programme on the door which I then regretted as it was unsigned and I didn’t feel like paying for a second programme just to get the signatures. I suppose with hindsight I could have seen if I could have part-exchanged at the merchandise stall but oh well. I did acquire an adorable little moose at the stall and the main thing was I had a programme.

We found our seats despite a slight confusion as to which way the numbering was going and settled down to wait for the start of the concert. We had pretty good seats - right by the aisle about 10 rows back – and so could see the stage pretty well. We were less lucky in the people around us unfortunately. The two people behind were talking very now and then even during the songs and the people in front more so. They were also eating crisps though that wasn’t as noisy as it might have been fortunately. But still, it was really irritating. However, I mostly managed to ignore them as I was determined not to let it ruin my first Libera concert – something I’d been really looking forward to and might well not get a chance to do again for a while.

One of the marshal made the safety announcements but the microphone was really bad and I hardly caught any of it. So I was left hoping that a) there wouldn’t be an emergency and b) that Libera’s mics were better than that! Then the much clearer announcement of Oscar J welcoming us and asking us not to film was played, which alleviated worry b a bit, and the boys trooped onto the stage. We were off!

Twilight was an absolutely gorgeous start to the concert. This wasn’t a Libera song I knew very well (I’m less familiar with some of their earlier songs which they haven’t repeated) but I went and listened on Youtube after Ely and instantly liked it. But hearing it live was so much better. The boys came on stage from the rear to warm applause and gathered into groups. I can’t remember the exact details but I think there were about 8 in a group at the front of the stage on each side and then others further back and in towards the centre in more like a v shape. Morgan stood alone front and centre for the first verse. Then Pietro came from nearer the back to join him for the second. The rest of the boys kept their heads bowed then raised them to sing the chorus before dropping them. Morgan’s soft soothing voice is perfect for Twilight – it might have been written for him. It shimmered and whispered, drawing me in. Pietro sang beautifully on the second verse harmony – his voice has a similar soft quality to Morgan’s and they sound beautiful together. The choir harmonies on the chorus made me feel like I was floating. An absolutely magical start.

Sanctus was a complete change of tone. I know some regular concert goers on here are a little tired of Sanctus (!) but I was very glad to hear it live as it is a quintessential Libera song and they did it beautifully. The bigs came onstage and I was very surprised to see first Matthias and then Koji. They’d joined Freddie, Daniel, Jack and Ludwik from Ely to make a back row of six. In this and several other songs, I noticed their voices more prominently than on the album versions which for me was a lovely plus. The only drawback to this song for me was nothing to do with the choir but occurred when the person in front of me spilled a drink. They didn’t seem inclined to do anything about it, although at the start we’d been asked to report any liquid spillages to the marshals, none of whom were anywhere near naturally! I had images of someone slipping on it, possibly even the Libera boys as I know they occasionally process down the aisle in concerts. So I waited for the end of the song then slipped to the back while the applause was going on to get a marshal. They said they’d have to wait till the interval but a couple of songs later someone did come and deal with it. Fortunately for me, they had a speech before the next song so I didn’t miss any music or risk distracting the singers as I slipped back to my place.

I couldn’t tell you for sure who gave that speech but according to reviews from Ely, the equivalent there was given by Pietro and Theo and I’ve no reason to think it was different here. I think they said welcome to the concert and mentioned that Twilight hadn’t been sung for 20 years and also that Libera had become Libera in 1999 so they were kind of celebrating a 25 year anniversary. Then they said that the next song Sea Bird had only been written this year and introduced Joseph who was going to sing it.

The staging for Sea Bird was stunning. It started with Joseph at the front and all the other boys in two long lines facing outwards behind him. Then gradually as the song went on they stepped outwards, fanning out like birds’ wings. I’d like to listen to the song a few more times before I form an opinion on it but I can say that Joseph did a great job (he sings a large part of it solo) and the choir parts were as always beautifully sung.

Voca Me is not on my absolute Libera favourites list but it’s a piece I was excited to hear live because it’s so dramatic and it did not disappoint. The boys were scattered about stage facing in different directions with Joseph singing the descants from a slightly raised position at the back right. The lighting was dim (blue I think) but every time Joseph sang the high notes, he was spotlighted in white. The emotion in the choir parts of the song, how it builds to a climax then fades away with the last notes was almost unbearably poignant.

You’d think Joseph might have earned a rest after that but no he was straight back to the front of the stage for The Prayer which he delivered brilliantly singing softly with a lot of emotion (having read Lincoln reviews I understand he had a much longer journey between solos there there which he coped with equally well). Again this isn’t my favourite song but it does really suit Joseph’s voice and way of singing. I was also impressed on this and several other songs with the volume the whole choir got – I know they have microphones to help but it’s still a big sound they create.

Then came O Beata, a song I wasn’t quite sure about the first time I heard it on Forever but quickly grew to love. Cameron started the song beautifully – I think I prefer Mitchel’s album version as it’s even more poignant and haunting but Cameron did a great job. Mitchel joined him with the lower harmonies, blending wonderfully and then the choir came in with a great swell of sound and harmony, uplifting and moving at the same time. The final alleluias are still echoing in my ears as I write this. It was also nice to hear Mitchel’s voice alone at the start of the second verse. Slightly raw but very pleasant and controlled. Considering he was a treble a year ago and so how little experience he’s had singing in lower registers, I think he’s going to have a lovely adult voice

Hal and Samuel then came forward to talk about the miniboys and the bigs. They pointed out that some of the bigs like Daniel and Freddie were soloists just a year ago and commented on the amount of change that goes on in a choir like theirs. I think here was where they mentioned Liam was a former singer and was now conducting them. They speculated that one day boys like Ben might be among the bigs and then made a joke about not wishing their lives away which made me smile.

I don’t love Love Shine a Light as an original song but I do love Libera’s version both because it’s more interesting and because the simplicity of the words work very well for a children’s choir. Morgan and Hal sang the first verse together, their distinct voices blending well and then the rest of the choir came in. Morgan delivered the last fading line. I prefer the version with Mitchel’s solo at the start but Hal and Morgan sounded great together and it was nice to get a chance to hear Hal who was stood directly in front of me for most of the concert and looked so happy and enthusiastic while singing.

I love Salva Me and I was excited to hear it live. And it did not disappoint. Ben’s Salvas weren’t super loud but they were crystal clear and pure. He stood in the middle of the front row of group to the right of the stage (the audience’s left) and confidently delivered his part. I always think that’s a hard solo to do live because the rest of the choir are at times singing something totally different in pitch and rhythm and the soloist has to keep on their own pitch and timing. Ben was extremely impressive and should certainly be soloing for the group for many years to come.

Back to Ben’s brother Joseph for The Lark’s Last Song. I don’t remember much about this song but I do remember really enjoying it. The lyrics are very poignant all about ending and sacrifice and I also wonder if they’re referring to Robert Prizeman – ‘The lark’s last song… in homage now to thee’ and his legacy ‘The sound is gone, But never truly lost, Within us it shall remain’. Joseph sings it beautifully and I already think it’s going to be one of my favourites on the new album.

Lewis Q and Edward told us all about that piece and about moose. Edward quite reasonably asked how an animal native to North America came to be the mascot of a choir based in London. Lewis replied that it was a long story. Longer than the (I can’t remember the number) of millennia since moose were thought to have roamed the UK, Edward asked. Potentially, Lewis replied. They then told us the interval was coming up after the next song and encouraged us to buy merchandise!

I am the Day was, I think, one of my highlights. It was getting darker now so the lighting contrasts were more dramatic. Morgan was brilliant. His voice is made for this song, soft and smooth. The first time I ever heard this song was the recording on Youtube of the Leiden concert with Josh singing the solo, backed by Sam, and I do think Morgan’s voice has some similarities to Josh’s – that lovely soft quality they get. The whispers were done by Joseph I think, he was right in front of me and was certainly mouthing the words, though I guess he could just have been singing along under his breath! Joseph also had a high harmony on the ‘In aeternam’ parts. Regular concert goers – is that a new thing? Or has it been going on for ages, and just isn’t in the recordings I’ve got? Ben’s descants absolutely rang out, stronger than his Salvas and Daniel’s responses raised the hair on the back of my neck. The high notes at the end were sensational, absolutely spine-chilling. They rang and reverberated around the space.

I've never taken my mother to a Libera concert (and probably never would), but I have taken her to hear CVMS, which she loved. Did your mum enjoy it?

Yeah, I knew about the race meeting in Chester, what I didn't know was that they would all empty out into the streets of Chester afterwards! Nor how drunk most of them would be! I was also glad that the area around the cathedral was much quieter.

I liked the natural lighting in Chester early in the concert more than the equivalent in Lincoln, but when it got darker outside and brought the concert lighting into it, then Lincoln was the far superior and the more open plan design of Lincoln meant the pulpitum, columns and ceiling became a huge canvas. But there were bits in Chester I loved too, like the dark silhouette of the rood screen late on in the concert, with the lighting behind it.

Such things can be very distracting and annoying! As Sartre put it... "L'enfer, c'est les autres".

Thanks for all your reflections on the pieces so far, I haven't written anything in detail about the pieces in either concert, so it's nice to read your memories of the pieces and I look forward to reading more.

It is great to read your review Cat-a-tonic ! Looking forward to the second part. I think the harmony in I am the day on "in aeterna(m) ?" isn't new but it is not on every record. I never spotted who did it during a concert though. You seem to have quite the eye and also good memory !

You seemed to have been unlucky in regards to neighbours  I hope you get to enjoy a concert in good company someday. Are you going to attend the Christmas concert ?

Thank you, Citlec and Padmachou for your kind words and responses. And your sympathy on my neighbours. The pair in front also started filming at one point and I didn't want to say anything mid-song as it might be disruptive but someone clearly had a word at the interval as they stopped after that.

Citlec - yes my mum did enjoy the concert. She doesn't know Libera as well as I do but she got into it and she particularly enjoyed the covers of songs she knew like 'Love Shine a Light', 'God Only Knows' and 'From a Distance'. From my selfish perspective it was great to have her there as she drives so I didn't have to get the train!

Padmachou - thank you for the information on the harmony. I'd been wondering if it was new and if so if that suggested I am the Day might be being prepared for reissue on their next album. But if it isn't new then that may be a false conclusion! Re the spotting I got lucky - Joseph was almost directly in front of me. I think it's unlikely I'll attend the Christmas concert but if things change workwise before then, then I might be able to go.

Here is Part 2.

The interval seemed to fly by and we were back in our seats for Beati. This is a great concert half opener. It’s lively and fun and the boys seem to enjoy singing it. There were lots of smiles, lots of movements onstage and they kept together as the song sped up. Joseph was excellent on the descant. I do prefer the duet intro as opposed to the whole choir doing it because it builds more that way but it still sounds great when the choir do it.

Leon and Cory came forward then to tell us about the pairs of brothers in the choir. This was really funny as the brothers paired off onstage as the first couple did put their arms around each other though they looked slightly awkward but a couple of the later pairs were like nope not doing that! Caius came over from the side of the stage to high five Cory which made everyone smile. Then they announced that the next two songs were about angels – just like them! – which got a wry chuckle from the audience.

Pietro and Morgan came to the front for Angel and I believe the other boys arranged themselves in two concentric v-shapes/semi circles just behind them. Pietro started off the first verse. I thought he sounded perhaps a touch hesitant but he sang very well. Morgan joined him for the harmony on the last two lines then the whole choir came in. The ‘For you’re always near to me’ lines were sung by the whole of the inner semi circle not just the soloist. Then Morgan delivered the second verse with aplomb, Pietro joining him for the harmony. I can’t remember who did the last line or whether they did it together. The choir sounded wonderful and while I can’t remember the lighting in detail it was very atmospheric.

Angele Dei – began in darkness with no stage lighting at all. The boys surrounded Morgan in the same 2 semi-circles/v shapes as above with hands clasped. The lights shone white on the illumina parts (fittingly) then faded again for the verse. I was so impressed with Morgan here. Most of his previous solos had made use of his soft voice but here he proved he can do the classic boy treble high notes too, delivering them with great strength and purity. The choir supported him, underpinning and overlapping but never drowning out. This is another Libera song that’s grown on me since its release and it was a great one to hear live.

Then we had From a Distance. I was gutted not to hear Nathan’s solo on this as I’d heard so many good things about it but he and Freddie H’s duet was great and it was another wonderful song to hear live. The harmonies on the ‘God is watching us’ and the vocalized middle section blew me away, even better than the recording.

Freddie H was up again for Sacris Solemnis and delivered a composed, measured solo. If that sounds like damning with faint praise it really isn’t meant to be – those are exactly the qualities I think you need for that solo. He started in the middle of the arc then walked back to his place in it once his solo had finished. This was a fascinating song to watch and hear as there’s not much movement but so much going on vocally as the harmonies get gradually more and more complex. As someone else has already said the high notes were fantastic, strong and pure, yet delicate when required. I didn’t notice Oskar doing them with the Hills so thanks to whoever spotted that. They did an excellent job. Don’t know who did the final vocalise and Gaudia but guess it was probably the same as Lincoln.

Pietro and Edward returned to tell us about how the next song was based on a work by Beethoven as was Sacris Solemnis. They talked about how one piece was written when he was deaf but it still sounded good to them. They also informed us that it would be on their new album to be released in the autumn which definitely sounded good to them. No arguments there! Edwards then introduced Julian as the main soloist.

I loved One Small Voice. The intro vocalises by Ben and Freddie H instantly drew me in and then Julian started to sing. I was really impressed with his performance on only his second solo and first solo piece – his voice was clear and steady and stronger than I was expecting. I love the words too. Then the choir joined in, then Joseph sang the next part, then the choir again. It finished with Ben and Freddie’s four note Ahs tying the song together. I cannot wait to hear this again.

Then came Ave Maria. Having read rave reviews of Lewis’s performance at Ely, I was looking forward to hearing this again and Lewis did not disappoint. He looked and sounded completely in control. He stood in the centre of two semi circles with the inner circle kneeling – I can’t remember if they got up at any point. The choir as always were great.

Then we had God Only Knows with emerald green lighting for some reason. Thomas M and Joseph stood side by side at the front with the others in groups behind (I think).Thomas did a great job on the main solo, singing in a slightly pop style that suits the song. Luca is a hard act to follow but he did it well, putting his own interpretation on the song. Joseph who’d been excellent all evening chimed in with what used to be Daniel’s part and then the choir came in. Nathan walked calmly forward from the back to centre stage to deliver the lower solo. I like the sound of his lower voice. Thomas and Joseph harmonized well though I do prefer the contrast in voice quality and pitch that you get with Luca and Daniel doing it. And the final God Only Knows chorus was incredible to hear live – it’s so complicated. It was perhaps a bit less defined than the album version but the swell of sound made up for that.

Archie came forward to introduce himself and tell us it was the mini boys’ first tour with Libera. He told us the last song was called Sing and fittingly they liked singing it though they had to move their mouths very fast. He was incredibly composed – he had moved on to thanking us for coming when he remembered he’d missed a bit on Sing so he just calmly said ‘Oh wait’ told us the lyrics were originally in Indonesian and then went back to thanking us for coming and hoping we’ enjoyed the concert. He got probably the loudest applause of the night barring the end of concert.

Sing was another great one to hear live. I wasn’t sure about it when I first heard it on If but it’s another one that’s grown on me as it’s so lively and fun. I also like the lyrics about harmony and singing together and hope for the future. When you see it live it’s clear the boys enjoy singing it. There are lots of smiles and animation. It’s infectious – I think everyone was smiling and jigging along. There was quite a lot of movement on stage. I can’t remember details but I think they went from groups to more of an arc. I do remember that they took a step forward each time on ‘Sing for our World’ as if to emphasise the importance of those words. In a way I think this song expresses Libera’s mission statement – to ‘sing for our world and our hope for tomorrow’. Through their singing and youth they bring hope and joy. It’s a very appropriate song for them.

I agree with whoever said that Sing would make a better encore and concert ending than Smile but that didn’t mean I wasn’t delighted to hear Smile. Ben did a lovely job on this, his voice is young and sweet and innocent, making the lyrics all the more poignant. Mitchel stood just behind Ben doing the lower harmony. He seemed a little quiet to me and I wondered if he was holding back to make sure he didn’t overpower Ben and had just erred on the side of caution. I know the low harmony is meant to be soft but it’s still distinctive. However, I can’t fault Mitchel for his role as supporting soloist in making sure that Ben could be heard. As with every song the choir part is beautiful and it was a complete contrast to Sing but a lovely one.

General Thoughts

Going to my first Libera concert was an amazing experience though as many others have said the time flies by! I spent quite a bit of Twilight almost pinching myself, hardly able to believe and I was there and that the choir I’d heard so much of and seen in videos were actually there, only a few metres away.

I loved the range of soloists. Joseph and Mogan took on the bulk of the solos but there were so many others: Pietro, Cameron, Mitchel, Hal, Ben, Frederick H, Nathan, Julian, Lewis Q and Thomas M. I feel really lucky to have heard so many different voices. The range of voices is one of the things that I liked about Libera from the start so having that expressed in the concert was great.

Morgan and Joseph were incredibly impressive. Morgan looked so serene and in control. Joseph looked a little more intent but to be fair the range of solos he had was astonishing. From piercing descants in Voca Me to emotional singing in The Prayer and The Lark’s Last Song and more meditative singing in Sea Bird.

While the soloists are great, the richness of the choir harmonies should also be mentioned. Every boy, soloist or not, contributes hugely to the sound and overall performance. They must have to work so hard to get to the level they do.

There are a few songs I wish had been included. In Paradisum – well I knew that unlikely but Libera, Far Away and Lux Aeterna were all on the set list not that long ago. Still I knew it was unlikely that the programme would change from Ely and I’m really not complaining as I heard 20 fantastic songs.

I’d like to finish with a word on the speakers. Singing is what they all do but some are clearly more comfortable than others making speeches. However they all deliver them well and their teamwork is excellent. One boy (I won’t mention names) made a mistake and dried up a little. However I was impressed both by how quickly his partner picked up the loose end and by the fact that when that same boy had a second speech later he came back and managed to correct his mistake while making a joke out of it. I was so pleased for him – that takes a lot of courage and composure.

Overall a wonderful experience which I definitely hope will not be my last. I’m sorry I didn’t get as chance to meet any of you who were there – we had to hurry off at the end so we could get partway home in the light. Another time, hopefully! And if you’ve read this far thank you for letting me indulge and share my excitement!
