I really like St John's, perhaps my second favourite (traditional) choir after New College. You are really getting the chance to see some great British singing talent at the moment Rebecca. If you're not too careful you might turn into a LimeyRebecca (: wrote:I'll be seeing them on Monday the 11th!JimmyRiddle wrote:Two reputable choirs from England currently touring the States at present;

Enjoyed a nice chat with some of the boys afterwords as well, and bought a CD!

Paul mentioned a while ago that Songs of Praise was doing a show to find the best school choir in the country. The final was last Sunday and it consisted of six choirs - three junior and three senior.
Here are the songs performed by the junior choirs. Unfortunately one has been banned from showing in the UK by EMI and I don't know why as there is no apparent link.
Want to guess who won (and don't cheat and use Google)?

If anybody is interested I could perhaps do the senior choirs next?

I didn't really know what to expectYorkie wrote:Did you doubt meRebecca (: wrote:Wow... that was amazing... I couldn't believe what I was hearingIt was a great concert, one that I'd love to see again!
Enjoyed a nice chat with some of the boys afterwords as well, and bought a CD!Which CD did you get? And while I'm asking what songs did they perform, was it a sell out and what did you like about them?

I got the 'Hear My Words" one, since the man behind me said it was the best. One of the little boys actually 'helped' sell it to me, which was cute! (took the money, handed me the CD, etc.)
They changed up the program a little bit, since the church had better acustics then they thought, so I belive the finaly songs ended up being:
Ave Verum
Laetentur coeli
Libera nos
Magnificat tertii toni (organ solo)
Prelude and Fugur in C (organ solo)
I love the Lord (side note - this one was cool! They had 3 of the men, 2 tennors and a bass, if remember correctly, up on the balcony and they sang some long sustained notes the whole time that sounded amazing with the echo!)
My beloved spake
Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen
Interval
Bogoroditse Byevo
One thing I have desired of the Lord
Panis Angelicus (this one was wonderful!)
Allegto riisoluto (organ solo)
Cantique de Jean racine
The Twelve (had an amazing treble soloist! Although I didn't catch his name while talking to him..)
Unfortuntly it did not sell out, and was not too close to either. We were on the 5th pew up, with only 3 other people beside us. and no one was in the first 3 rows, although they weren't reserved. I would've liked to see more people there, espically since it was free, but it did feel more like a private concert. Well, I really liked how their sound seemed to fill up the whole space, and maybe I was missing this with Libera since it was only in a playhouse, but the echo was what really got me... it was just so beautiful. Oh, and some of the trebles were so adorable! There was one who couldn't have been older than 7 who was tiny! smaller than mini James! anyway, he looked kind of nervous and kept biting his nails and stuff, which was cute

Sounds wonderfulRebecca (: wrote:I didn't really know what to expectYorkie wrote:Did you doubt meRebecca (: wrote:Wow... that was amazing... I couldn't believe what I was hearingIt was a great concert, one that I'd love to see again!

I have that CD, very enjoyable. Shame about the numbers who attended but I guess most people don't share our love of choral music. Did your mom enjoy it?
I think the kid was probably eight because that is the age they normally join from - it is tied up with age they normally start prep school here in the UK.
Finally, do you think that the choir would have sounded the same with girls singing the Treble parts (and please feel free to say yes - I value your opinion as a soprano who sings in a choir)?

I'm happy ith my selection, might order a few more of their albums! Ah yes, we were pretty shocked at the small audience, but it was still an enthuastic audience, which was good. Although my mom and I were some of the only one's there under 60! (or so it seemed! I was one of 2 kids thereYorkie wrote:Sounds wonderful![]()

Oh okay, that makes since! He was just so tiny! haha...
Oh defiently not.. funny enough my mom asked me the exact same thing on the drive home last night. I think the sound of a boy soprano voice is so much more pure than that of a girl's. I can't exactly say why, but I feel like it would have a completly different sound, and just wouldn't be as.. well, I don't quite know the word I'm looking for, but reffering the the girls in Libera thread I think I'm trying to say what most everyone else said.

Rebecca, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the St John's Choir performance. Yes, it is a shame when they don't get a full crowd, but it's nice to see your bucking the trend. Got to admit if you had brought classical/choral to my feet when I was your age I would have run a mile. How things change lol
You'll be tired of it by the time you reach adulthood, and revert back to rap or rock lol ... but yes more than I expected with your review, so thanks a lot!
Interesting to note on the weblog http://usa2011.chchchoir.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that Christ Church Cathedral Choir have been in Toronto too, and flew back to London, just before Libera landed lol
