Hey Yorkie! Well, actually I work at a film soundtrack label and have spoken to a few composers over the phone. I noticed someone here is a fan of James Newton Howard and we work with him a lot. Also, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino(who just won an Oscar!) and many other current composers.
Any chance you know James Horner? I think he is one of the greatest modern symphony composers ever. His soundtrack recordings do not need the movie to succed. They are wonderful on their own.
Hey TEB! We have worked with Horner in the past but, unfortunately, I have not personally met or talked with him. I agree with you and am a fan of his scores as well. Some of my favorites: Glory, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall to name just a few. What are some of yours?
The music for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is probably my favorite. The french horn solo in the opening credits is just great. Glory, The Land Before Time, Field of Dreams, Aliens all rank up there. In fact, in Aliens, his music makes the movie that much scarier and during the count down before the reactor explodes, the music really builds the suspense. Will Ripley make it?
I have to ask, if you do ever get the chance to meet him, would you tell him just how much I like his music, please?

Hey, no problem Tom! Yes, Aliens is one of my favorites as well and both of his Star Trek scores are great. Cocoon is another one that I love. The theme is very moving and the film is one of Ron Howard's best. I think the ship desending through the clouds at the end as Horner's music swells is a perfect union of music and picture. Horner also has used a boy choir effectively in a few of his scores, notably Glory and Brainstorm while Land Before Time and Willow both used King's College Choir. It's nice to know we have some Horner fans here. He is much criticised in some parts of the film music community though for plagiarizing himself, Prokofiev and others. Sometimes it bothers me in some of his scores but many great composers of the past have done this before.

Listen to the finale to The Rocketeer once. He uses his finali to Star Trek there as well. Note for note. In Aliens, he "borrowed" a theme from music used in 2001: A Space Odyssey. From the Gayne Ballet Suite. But, you know what, to me, it just makes his music that much more enjoyable to me. I will hear something I know is familiar and then search it out to find out where I heard it before, probably learning something new in the process. God Bless James Horner.
