Wales landscape is quite rugged. My guess would be the more bucolic Lincolnshire Wolds.

They were at the top of the Mam Tor Hill, in the Peak District
(To make it simple, it's halfway between Chester and Lincoln)

Thanks Patrick. I should have known. We passed by it on our way back to Manchester while taking a slight detour to visit my great grandfather's grave. He probably climbed it in his day.
