Yeah, it's a really good deal. Of course there are a limited number and it's first come first served. I do like the fact that there are these sort of ticket deals for a lot of things, like opera, ballet or classical music and of course theatre and musicals. I've only done the LPO Wildcard there a couple of times, other times I've simply bought a cheaper seat, or occasionally even paid full price. :o But I got an amazing wildcard seat there once, front row of the circle, for Sir Simon Rattle conducting Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust, which was quite awesome. Doesn't always work out with cheap tickets to thing. I'd wanted to see Akhnaten at the ENO after loving Satyagraha, but sadly I didn't get lucky with cheap seats and missed out completely.

Here's a choir on my long list of ones yet to hear live. Linköpings Gosskör.

They are a Swedish choir who have been to England at least once, in 2015 (sadly before I even knew they existed).

https://www.facebook.com/linkopingsgosskor

Why bring them to your attention now? Well firstly one of their trebles is the 2024 Ã…rets gossopran

https://www.svenskakyrkan.se/linkoping/arets-gossopran

But secondly because they posted about CVMS and their Sweden tour!

https://www.facebook.com/linkopingsgoss ... MvNZw9L24l

As they say in Swedish:

Missa inte chansen att höra en av världens bästa körer!

12-year-old Australian handpan musician Sunni Holden has just released his latest music video, "Little Seed". He will also be featured on Primitive Planet's Trust Your Wild Side 2 later this summer.

Citlec (and of course everyone else who is around there), you've probably long been informed, but if not:
I'd like to draw your attention to Oxford's Merton College Choir singing in Temple Church in London on 6th December:

https://x.com/MertonCollChoir/status/18 ... 1vVuQ&s=03
"We look forward to returning to The Temple Church on 6 December as part of the Winter Festival."

Merton College Choir is a brilliant choir, one of my favourites, an appreciation which was confirmed during my Oxford trip in 2022, when I attended two of their evensongs. And now the combination with Temple Church?!! :o I envy you already now.

Thanks for the info, it's definitely one I'd be interested to hear, they have a great reputation. I'll have to wait and see what else is on though. Music Directors have an annoying tendency to hold concerts I want to attend on the same day around that time of year. I've missed out on the Wabbey, London Oratory and others because of clashes with Libera/CVMS.

My current autumn/xmas planned is:
Drakensberg + CVMS @ Southwark 24th Sep
Beethoven's 9th @ RFH on 14th Nov
Libera @ SSS 1st Dec

And possible is:
Merton @ Temple 6th Dec
A Christmas Carol by Opera Holland Park @ SSS on 17th or 18th Dec
Christmas with King's College Choir @ Barbican 20th Dec

But I would expect both lists to grow significantly as other choirs release their future events!

I've also heard good things about this choir. Should explore some recordings.

Poor you! So many fabulous choirs...how does one choose from among them?

Oh, woe is me!

:P

Ideally you don't choose, and just see them all... my record is 50 concerts and 30+ choirs in one year. But doing so requires a bit of luck, and a lot of money... neither of which I seem to have much of these days. (yes, yes, I can see you reaching for the world's smallest violin!)

King's College above is a "possible" simply because it's a lot of money for what you get. £45+ for a concert I've always enjoyed but never been blown away by? Meh.

I'll be over here, in the corner, lamenting my first world problems. :P

  Yeah 50 concerts in a year is unthinkable...and yet praiseworthy/enviable #turnsgreen.

I feel like King's College is probably better for services than concerts these days, no? I wonder how they're fairing under Daniel Hyde versus Cleobury.

Yes, indeed. Sometimes so much clashes on one day that you wonder if there aren't several hundred more days along the year.

I'd like to hear a service or a concert at Temple Church really badly - and if it was a choir like Merton, then I'd rush there. What a pity that there isn't a temporal connection with Libera's concert. But always good for you to have so many opportunities, and I have to say that I'm complaining on a high level as well, as in and around Cologne I'm blessed with plenty and plenty of good music.

You should. A favourite of mine is "Again (after ecclesiastes)", but there are many good evensongs to be found on Youtube. And recordings of course. In Oxford, I found them superb. Touching singing, clear voices, perfectly balanced sound.

They have a secret cabal, and between them choose the days that will most frustrate choral fans over the Christmas period. I think they call themselves the Scroogeinati.

I'd temper your enthusiasm by saying it's one of those venues where you need a bit of luck to get a decent seat, for both sound and view. But as a historic venue, it's pretty special.

I've been lucky enough to hear, New College, Magdalen, Norwich Cathedral, Thisted Kirke, Westminster Cathedral, Temple Church themselves (a few times) and even CVMS there once (back in 2017).

The Temple Church Choir are singing Vivaldi's Gloria in concert next week, sadly (not for them!) now sold out.

Well, without wanting to rub any more salt in Sabine's wounds, yes, I hope to be there next week. :D

So their Christmas concerts I've found tend not to be their best showcase. One of the best concerts of theirs was their Barbican concert in 2017 where they sung Chichester's Psalms and Dona Nobis Pacem, for their album release of the same pieces and it was fantastic. But the very best I've heard was one in Cadogan Hall where they sung mostly a cappella, and I just found the sound they produced and the tonal quality utterly stunning.

I've heard them once under Hyde, and they were very good, excellent in some pieces even, if not really outstanding.

I was at the RFH in 2018 for their Xmas concert and it was clear Cleobury was already struggling, he made to move the choir offstage and the light started to go up, only for someone to remind him there was still music to play... I was also at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, in June 2019, there as Press for a choral magazine, where he gave a talk about cathedral choirs and choristers. He passed away in November that year.

I've just checked and there are still tickets available, it's only the middle tier tickets that are sold out. So if anyone is interested it does sound like it should be a nice concert.

Oh, they must have released some more, it was definitely totally sold out a couple days ago.

Looks like a bit of an idiosyncratic seating arrangement, I'm not sure where the best ones are, especially as they don't show the pillars on the plan. Anyway I doubt I can make it any more as I've now got something else arranged that day.

It is always difficult to know where to sit. In March for Magdalen I got there late because I foolishly went to another concert directly before it. Luckily a friend had saved me a seat, so my main problem was I got a bit too much Theorbo.
► Show Spoiler
Norwich Cathedral Choir in December sang in the choir stalls, so you could only see half of the choir wherever you sat, although the sound was fine.
► Show Spoiler
Thisted Kirke actually sang on one side of the choir stalls.
► Show Spoiler
And Westminster Cathedral and CVMS both sang at the other end.
► Show Spoiler
But from the seating plan my guess is it will be the same as Magdalen and last summer's concert with the singers at the back. I'll just have to try harder to get there early enough to nab a decent spot.
