Applauding early

Just a minor rant about last night.

Maybe I'm the only one that this bothers? But the Early Applauders Club TM were back in force yesterday. I wonder, have people heard of the concept of waiting until the song has actually finished before starting to applaud? You do realise it's not a competition? Trying to be the first to applaud doesn't make you the biggest fan, it just makes you an annoying $%&*£!

Sorry, had to get that off my chest!

I share your opinion.
These idiots are really annoying.
A few years ago, I tried to tell the chief moron to stop clapping like a machine gun at the end of songs, but unfortunately it had no effect.

100% agree! This behaviour is simply disrespectful towards choir and audience, nothing else.

I'll third your comment. Not sure what is trying to be achieved. Is it attention seeking? I can't really explain why a grown man would otherwise not be able to restrain himself from waiting a moment after the music has ended to start the applause.

Do they applaud at the beginning of songs as well?

I didn't make it to Ely this time, but have experienced that, um, "club" as well repeatedly, so: I second every single one of your posts. It upsets me at any concert. Seems as if people want to brag with "Look, I am so familiar with this piece, I know when it's finished" or "Look, I'm the best, as I'm the first to thank Libera for their song", implying of course that the person is better than everyone else in the audience. Attention seeking, yeah, but those who do it this way, have a different problem, I think.

I myself like it the exactly opposite way: A few moments of silence after a moving song, that is precious to me, a tiny bit of time to return from the music back to sober reality and then show enthusiasm, gratefulness and admiration. This is not too late at all. I remember a few times when the entire Libera audience kept maintained that silence for a couple of seconds, and this was wonderful. Showing the artist that their music went to your heart, is the most beautiful compliment they can get, while clapping prematurely destroys the magic. And it also shows that the clapper has stopped listening too early.

Dear most-early-clapper: The final note in its full length (and probably even the reverb after a song) belongs to the song itself! Please do Libera the favour not to deprive them of it (and us and yourself).

Oh noooooo

I was hoping that this club had moved on from attending many Libera concerts, but I guess they're back in full force. People really need to learn how to behave themselves at concerts and with right etiquette. The purposes of rules and etiquette aren't to stifle free expression or to be a source of social conformity by "the man", but for the enjoyment of an event by everyone. You're not really a rebel or an enlightened figure when you disturb the peaceful enjoyment of others for your own aggrandizement and narcissism.
