I am postive it is Ed on Ave Virgo , was not keen on it at first but its really grown on me, when he says gloriosa it sounds totally like Ed.
Exsulate i can not see it in a concert as thinking if Sanctu was considered to hard to sign for first 6 months then Exsulate has gotta be nearly impossable to get right live. Also Bens voice sounds younger on it so do wonder how long ago it was sung for album.

haha that made me laugh!lacrymosa2 wrote: Regarding "Exsulate", my feelings are on par with the majority of the members. Like illuminaperpetua, I could see the elves swarming my house like army ants and my roof falling apart. With the jokes aside, two things I liked about this song was the different layers of voices being used, especially the low ones and the Medieval theme.

P,s this is gonna be a Mini Ben album but we all guessed that, clearly Ed has been overlooked.
Tom had 6 on New Dawn (ave maria, air, rest in peace, love and mercy, may the road rise up and never be alone).
Ben would have Sanctissima, Time, Exsultate, Lacrymosa (and depending on who you believe some also credit him with Ave Virgo too).
I'm 105% sure that it's not Ben singing Ave Virgo. My best bet is Ed, and as many people here have pointed out, we may all certainly be wrong.
That being said, the treble on the opening solo is absolutely exquisite. The control is incredible, it rivals the late he-who-shall-not-be-named.

The only remaining treble I could possibly credit that to is Ed Day. Ed's technique and sheer control has always been excellent. I don't doubt that many here would agree with me here, when I say that Ben is good, but he lacks that technique, support, and control.
His voice has matured beautifully, but can you imagine him being tasked with holding that high note solidly for a prolonged period of time, all the while dipping and rising and dipping and rising intervals?
Ben has his strengths. He certainly shines at pieces like Exsultate which require a clear delivering of notes in rapid succession without too many extreme intervals.
Ed Day has always shone on more melancholy pieces like Ave Maria that are very difficult to pull off live without proper breathing and support.
But I digress...I love them both!

Yes, both soloists are exceptional, each in their own way. I agree about Ben's voice. He has a very good voice, for certain songs. The only word I can think of to explain how you put it is that he has a very "flexible" and "quick" voice since he can sing those quick runs of notes very clearly and distinctly. Also, I've noticed that on the newer songs where Ben does sing higher notes, it is usually just a quick, sharp one (and I don't mean sharp as in off-key), such as the note in "Exsultate" that comes around 2:18, or the high note on "Time" in the chorus. It is not prolonged, as the high notes of "Ave Virgo".bar wrote:Yorkie wrote:So, if almost everything is by Ben that we have heard to date it would set Ben up on the way to having the most solo parts on any album to date.dani wrote:Exsultate is 100% Ben no doubt at all

Ed's technique became evident on the 2006 album when he sang the closing notes of "Sanctus", in my opinion. He is the only soloist I can think of to credit with the solo on "Ave Virgo" because Tom's voice has broken already, and Josh's voice is not as powerful, being more wispy and having a distinct tone, which was missing in "Ave Virgo". Liam might have been able to pull it off before his voice started to deepen, but again, I think Liam has a little lighter tone and more "flexible" voice, as shown by his high notes on "Stay with Me"; and anyways the singing style seems to me to be distinctly Ed's. Especially the way "gloriosa" is said, and the way "ave virgo" is sung right at the end.
Ed's vocal tone is quite distinct, and while it sounds similar to Tom's, it is still different. I think Ed's voice has a little bit "deeper" tone to it than Tom's, like Tom's is a little thinner or lighter maybe, and Ed's tone sounds "rounder"--I don't know how to explain it any better; that is just what it sounds like to me.
Both Ed and Ben have excellent voices; they're just really different. I can relate to the difference in a way because when I used to sing in choir and take private vocal lessons, I discovered that, although I had a fairly high voice and a wide vocal range, songs that required more prolonged singing on top notes and greater interval leaps were not where my voice sounded best. I usually sounded better when the song involved lots of runs that had to be sung in quick succession and with brief, piercing high notes, versus sustained high notes, because my overall vocal texture and tone was lighter.
This does appear to be a Ben album. I think his solos are "Sanctissima", "Time" and "Exsultate". I don't think he's the soloist on "Lacrymosa" because the accent/diction is not the same as his usual style, and the tone is slightly darker too. I hope Ed has more than one solo too. And I hope to hear one from Liam?

I listened to Ave Virgo over and over while driving to and from work today (figured out that the mp3 links in this thread can be pulled up on my ipod and if I don't click "Done" in the play window when the song is over, I don't need a wifi connection to replay the song. Wahoo!). If the soloist isn't Ed, I'd be extremely shocked. Like others have said, the diction on just the word "gloriosa" sounds just like him. Not to mention the tonal quality and range of the voice. It's breathtaking..literally the first time I heard it I gasped hehe. Such a beautiful song and so nicely performed.
Not sure how I'm going to survive waiting for the CD to be delivered.

Ed was my first thought too and this is the song that, along withTime, I like the best on the album. What I don't get is how we have Lacry again (probably with Ben) but no Mysterium - The guys could have done a great vocal & video for mysterium, it would have been a real wow.Jenn wrote:I listened to Ave Virgo over and over while driving to and from work today (figured out that the mp3 links in this thread can be pulled up on my ipod and if I don't click "Done" in the play window when the song is over, I don't need a wifi connection to replay the song. Funny, because I actually distinguish them the opposite way. I'm probably wrong.haha. But for me, Ed's voice has always been more relaxed, a bit lighter than Tom. When Tom sings, I think he puts so much emotion into the song that it sounds heavier to me. That is why aside from the different voice, his Far Away is so different from Michael's. It's also the same when I compare Tom's rendition of Do Not Stand to that of Ben C. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is Ed's solos have always seemed more 'zen' like to me.hehe. That is probably because his voice fits those peaceful songs so much.plumpuff6 wrote: Ed's vocal tone is quite distinct, and while it sounds similar to Tom's, it is still different. going back to the latin lyrics on Exultate, can they be this perhaps??
i really have no idea:
et laudate domino in laetitia
et cantate domino, gloria
seculo et seculorum, alleluia
exsultate domino omnis populi alleluia
jubilate domino omnis terra alleluia
angeli et archangeli
salvete et laudate
vini mis et salvis
et gaudicis

Yeah, Time has been overplayed, my bad.. til i got a little tired of it. For now, it's The Fountain, don't know what's next coz Peace sounds so promising.. except maybe Lacrymosa which i think is lacking innovation, would of been nice if replaced by Ed's Mysterium.dani wrote:Took me a whole week to get there but
Ave Virgo is my fav track so far- think it will go back to Time but listened to it to death , which i will now do with Ave Virgo
I agree on Mysterium! The only recording I have is from one of the earlier CDs (horrible me, I can't think of which one it is now..Luminosa maybe?). I wish Libera was able to tour to the US more often, but I understand why they can't. I don't think I could ever travel overseas "just" for a concert. My heart says it'd be worth it, but my bank account does not agree. Mysterium is such an awesome song, I don't know why they don't record it more.
It's funny how we all seemed to adore Time, overplayed it, and are now doing the same to Ave Virgo and Fountain hehe.

I believe it's in "Libera" album, i'd say Mysterium is beautifully creepy lol. definitely needs to be re-recorded..Jenn wrote:I agree on Mysterium! Agreed, my bank account hates me when it comes to travelling-overseas-just-for-a-concert issue, so watching DVD is the only way for now.

If you have noticed in the compilation albums in the past few years (Angel Voices and The Best of...), Lacrymosa has been notoriously absent, although it has been used in many concerts since Ben C. originally recorded it. This is probably because it was originally released under a non EMI classics album. Look at the albums from which The Best of... takes tracks: Free, Visions, Angel Voices, and New Dawn. Rerecording Lacrymosa gives a) a new voice the chance to try it out, and b) RP the chance to keep it in rotation on any future Best of... albums (not that we need another one for quite a while).
Under a similar arguement, I wouldn't mind hearing Mysterium rerecorded. Or Vespera.
As for Exultate, I enjoyed the contrast between it and the other more tranquil tracks. I am also a bit of a Rennie (Renfaire patron), so I enjoy the medieval feel. It sounds like a fun song to sing.
