Sotto Voce (France)

Post by Padmachou »

I have attended the Christmas Concert from Sotto Voce two years in a row, and yet there is no designated topic there about this choir, so I thought I would make things right

You might have never heard about them, but this is in my opinion one of the best choirs in France right now. The conductor, Scott Alan Prouty is american and their style and vocal technics are from the tradition of choirs in UK and USA. I also like that the conductor is sometimes stepping down and letting the children shine by themselves. Some of the songs are in english, they sing Rutter pieces, Christmas carols in english and french...

You can find more about them on this website :
https://www.choeursottovoce.com/

Their Christmas Concert is a fantastic show. They have musical skills but also take from Musicals and learn to tap dance and their shows involve choregraphies, percussions and all sorts of talents. They enjoy themselves a lot on stage and share it generously with the audience. They also perform contemplative beautiful arrangements, like today a Silent Night... So if you plan to visit Paris during December, consider attending their Christmas concert !

You might be surprised to see how many (very) young children are among the audience. The choir is working with "théâtre du Châtelet" to make special performances branded for kids, from musicals to concerts, around 1h long. It is sometimes annoying (not every child and not every parent is on their best behavior) but also very nice to see how choir singing is valued and shared with young ones in a famous theatre.

A bit of a Musical performance

A more classical one

A slow one, beautiful sang today (I think they got even better since the time the video was shot, also the set was better with lights)

EDIT :

Ah, this one is a must here

Yes, very good, particularly liked the energetic Consider Yourself 😀

I think anything that allows young people to enjoy themselves and learn how to sing is to encouraged and nurtured and clearly they are doing a excellent job. I did notice that it was considerably more girls than boys and that is always the case when you have a mixed group for singing. I visited a UK Cathedral earlier this year that had a 'mixed' top line of boys & girls. Of the 15 or so present every single one was a girl.
If I’ve got owt to say I says it, and if I’ve got owt to ask I asks it.

I find they manage to get quite a high number of boys, young ones and older ones. I don't know how they recruit, if they take care to do so. But there are many boys in the choir, I don't think it will ever get to the point you described.
